Idiot here. Is it possible to do all motion graphics After Effects can do in DaVinci Resolve Fusion?
Let me preface this by saying that I have no experience what so ever with motion graphics or the industry or any thing link that. I'm a software developer who volunteers at a local high school to help kids learn programming. Also at work I found myself in a position of designing and implementing large pieces of software that I occasionally give educational presentations to the rest of the team since they will be required to maintain it and do customer support for (I have no idea how I managed to get there other than my manager liking my work and throwing new ideas and projects at me, so I feel very privileged in general)
I'm a very visual thinker, and can always visualize things in my mind to understand them. Whenever I'm explaining programming concepts to kids in school or trying to explain the design I arrived at to other software developers on my team, I usually build a PowerPoint deck with a shit ton of animations in an attempt to visualize what's going on in my stupid brain.
Since I have endless free time due to the pandemic, I was trying to figure out if there is a better tool to express my ideas visually like all the incredible youtube videos I watch every now and then. Eventually I came across After Effects and bought this course https://www.udemy.com/course/after-effects-kinetic-typography/. I've only gone through the first 4 chapters in it, and so far it's exactly what I was looking for. However, I'm a hobbiest, and I don't see myself using Adobe Suite for much other than editing videos and after effects for motion graphics. I'm more than happy to pay the $300 or so for a DaVinci Resolve Studio license (I've been using the free version for cutting random clips from my camera for a while now) but a $40/month payment for Adobe seems a bit too much giving the fact that I won't be using it that much.
Based on that, my questions are:
- Can I do motion graphics in DaVinci Resolve Fusion like After Effects?
- Do you know of any good learning resources like that Udemy course but for Fusion in DaVinci Resolve?
(As a side note, I like to write short stories sometimes, and a couple of months ago I bought a Fuji XT4, and have been trying to make short films of those stories starring my dogs. I've gotten familiar with DaVinci Resolve for editing and cutting, but I never used the Fusion tab. I'd much rather stick with it for everything than going to After effects, which is why I ask)

Check out Udemy also. I started with “After Effects Beginner to Expert” (looks like it’s $30 now). It covers so much. You don’t get to make super fancy amazing things but if you want to learn fundamental of how the program works I would highly recommend it. School of Motion is great. I just know it can be extremely pricey especially if you don’t know anything about AE yet.
Also u/ukramedia posts some amazing tips and tutorials. Highly recommend his channel. As well as Video Copilot of course.

I got a basic Udemy course on After Effects and followed a bunch of YouTube videos. I am by no means an expert but I get by. Biggest thing about the course is it gets you working with it.

It's huge, and I haven't finished it yet, but the teacher is sooo good.
I had the same issue you have. I had AE installed for like a year and I would just open it, look at it for 5 minutes without touching my mouse, and close it because it was intimidating.

Udemy has a ton of great and affordable courses. The one linked below focuses on technicality over creativity. There's some videos you can preview before purchasing. Good luck!
