Agreed. I've been learning ZBrush and Blender and may switch to just Blender. I love the new interface in Blender (version 2.8+) and I'm genuinely impressed with how much more intuitive, obvious and common sense it is. ZBrush might be more powerful for pro users, but Blender might be enough for me. If interested OP, here is a course that looks good for learning to sculpt in Blender. It is on my list to watch.

I don't think this is the most effective way to be completely honest haha, but it works for me so until I find something I like more I'll probably continue to use it.

I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but I learned this from the one and only course I actually paid real money for. The ultimate sculpting course on udemy. The link is here if you're interested and have some spare cash https://www.udemy.com/course/blender-3d-sculpting-course/

Otherwise just look up "making a blender base mesh from reference image" on youtube and find something that suits you preferences and skill level. There are lots of different approaches to making a base mesh and they are all valid and correct.

Best of luck!

Thanks! I've started a sculpting udemy that was on sale and it's been working pretty well - it goes step by step through the more commonly used ones and has some great tips. Following along with that has been great! I'm only on the first sculpt and not nearly finished with it, but it's definitely a good experience. If you can get it on sale, I only paid 12$. https://www.udemy.com/course/blender-3d-sculpting-course/
