New to UX (Switching Careers)

Hi everyone! I am in need of some advice.

I recently have finally decided to switch careers into something that is art and design-related as I've finally come to accept that this is my true calling, and that life is too short to be doing something I do not feel passionate about. It took a lot of courage for me to make this decision as there is a pretty big opportunity cost. Within art/design, I am naturally gravitating towards UX as I have a background in tech.

In undergrad, I pursued studying business information systems, and after that, I worked in management/technology consulting for 5 years and had some PM experience from it where I got a good foundation of software development/agile (I have since then burnt out from the consulting job and quit). I also recently spent half a year studying for a CS Master's which I also come to realize I was doing because it felt safe I was really afraid to pursue art/design (I am currently still enrolled in that Master's program, but only part-time/minimal effort).

Fast forward to now, I have chosen this design/art path and am trying to get into UX. I'm committing all my hours from which I would be normally working into learning UX but I am lost, a bit overwhelmed, and scared. I finished watching this Udemy course called "Complete Web & Mobile Designer in 2021" (to be frank, I thought the content was just so-so) and I am now starting to work on my first fictitious project on Figma (building the mockup) and practicing writing the case study. I am aiming to put together a portfolio with a few projects so that I can apply to jobs or at least get freelance work to help with the income for now.

From the UXers out there, I was wondering if I could get some guidance or advice.

If you were in my current position, what would be the best way to approach this path?
At what point would you start applying to jobs/freelance work (when your portfolio is still quite empty...)?
Would you have taken up freelance work for free?
Where do you go to find other people that are going through this same path?/Where to find peers to keep each other accountable or get feedback from?
Where do you go to network? Get information on companies that hire designers, info about their compensation and culture?
If you were to start all over again today, what would you do differently?

Any comments would be appreciated :)

Is this the kind of thing you mean? https://www.udemy.com/course/complete-web-designer-mobile-designer-zero-to-mastery

It does use Figma but it's not how to use Figma per se, it's a well rounded course on how to be a competent web designer using a tool that's built for web design.

Not sure about udemy courses(I took many of ZTM's programming courses and really liked them, they have one for uiux design but I didnt take that one) but I would recommend the following resources for learning ui/ux design

https://refactoringui.com/
https://learnui.design/blog/

You can take the google ux design courses on coursera for free. Choose the individual course, click enroll for free, choose audit at the bottom(though you wont get the certificate).
