I'm taking a udemy fingerpicking course now and making great progress with it. Would definitely recommend it but wait for a sale if you want to save some money on the site. I paid around $10 for it. https://www.udemy.com/course/fingerstyle-guitar-step-by-step/

Unfortunately, since you're a beginner again, learning a new style, it definitely won't feel like music for a while. I started learning guitar with the intention of playing fingerstyle, so I know exactly how you felt. What's very important to note is that it does take a couple months of practice before playing fingerstyle is "musically" enjoyable. Today, after lots of "non-musical" practice, I can sight-read most Travis picking songs, very easily picking up the bars. Here's some very important pointers that many Travis picking teachers very highly stress:

  1. Thumb independence. As much as you might want to jump the gun and start playing bars, much as I did, your Travis picking playing will not be good if you can't operate your thumb freely from other fingers. Once you really get this down, you'll realize that the thumb is always at work on the on-beats.

  2. Finger independence. Same as before, but having each finger work independently from one another, as well as each from the thumb. These will land on both the on-beats and off-beats.

  3. Once you understand this structure, you'll understand that the thumb will always be playing a bass pattern on the on-beats. After that, all you have to do is add the fingers on top of the now mindless bass pattern.

In terms of resources, there's two recommendations from me to begin learning Travis picking, one free and one paid. The free one is GuitarNick's fingerstyle series. As easy as the exercises are and how tempting it is to move on quickly (especially the first few ones), do try and take your time! The paid one is a Udemy course that I've used that contains excellent exercises, as well as step-by-step instruction of songs. Don't buy it when it's not on sale (Udemy has sales incredibly often, so seriously don't spend more than $20 on it)!

Good luck and keep on trying!

Additional note: learning patterns is good for exercises and getting the fingers used to different patterns. In reality though, songs will have many different patterns. Practicing many patterns will make picking up new songs so much easier!
