I am a junior software engineer working my first programming job - but my degrees are in a teaching field. My boss has recommended I learn computer science fundamentals. Where should I start?
I did my BA, MA, and part of a PhD in Humanities fields in preparation for a career in teaching at the college level. However, I had a crisis of faith in my career goals halfway through the PhD and left the program. At the behest of my two housemates, both of whom were PhD students in Computer Science, I began to study programming.
I studied Python for a year and then was offered an entry-level programming position by my mentor, with whom I studied during that period of self-instruction. We work primarily in Java. We often talk about the difference between "coders" and "programmers," and it's obvious to both of us that I will never really be a very proficient software engineer without knowing the fundamentals of computer science.
I have built gaming PCs from scratch, but that is pretty much the extent of my knowledge of computers. Where is a good place for me, a person with no background in CS, to begin learning CS in my spare time outside of work? There are a lot of online courses on Udemy and Khan Academy, but I know so little about CS I cannot even trust myself to evaluate those course descriptions.
