How To Get a Job in Video Game Industry

When I was starting out with game development I initially got confused with all the different tutorials, books, videos, and honestly wasted time with all that instead of just focusing on creating. I'd definitely say start with structured projects to learn the ins and outs of programming various game mechanics. Once you know how to do that in your library/engine of choice then it's more about being creative and starting your own projects or joining other projects, but make sure to start with small games then slowly increase the scope with each project.

To learn the actual programming behind games I totally recommend waiting for a Udemy sale and grabbing one of these courses (not affiliated with any of the courses but love each of the teachers' content)

Unity Course

Unreal Course

You can also try finding youtube videos, but I like the structure of courses a bit more. Also, I really loved this course for ideas on how to approach getting a job within the industry:

Game Industry Job Course

Depending on which library or engine you decide to use there may be a program to become a certified developer like Unity's

Finally, if you're serious about wanting to get a job in the industry I highly recommend every 2-3 months you go on LinkedIn and search for "game programmer" , "game developer", or "xyz engine/library" to find job descriptions for what you want to do as you learn. This way you make sure to learn skills that studios will hire you for.

Good Luck!!!
