John Purcell is a good teacher. It's not a free course but even at full price it's only £20.

My experience so far has been that the Hyperskill projects get really hard really fast. Recommend checking out Mooc as mentioned in another comment. I also just started John Purcell's class as well, not sure if it's because I did Mooc and Hyperskill before but his content has been very easy to digest (possibly also because he's fluent in English unlike the others): https://www.udemy.com/course/java-11-complete-beginners/

I have the same course and feel the same way, much of the course is rushed , I tell people all the time that that course is not designed well for beginners.

Id like to recommend a video course and instructor that I am enjoying. He doesnt get into spring but does use fx and and Swing some. His advanced course does work with Spring, but I haven't started that yet.

After that you could consider Team treehouse or even Udacity.
