Learned a lot from this class on udemy. Also bought a drone lately which was very entertaining as well.

The camera and lenses are nothing to write home about, but gear is not as big of a limitation for photography than you think it is.

__

"are the lenses good? Is one better than the other? Do they serve different functions?"

Eh, they're okay. They serve roughly the same purpose

"And if I invested in a new camera, would these old lenses work with the new camera."

Yes, as long as they fit canon EF/EF-s mount or adapt to said mount

__

What I'd suggest is maybe get a photography course on udemy before you start blowing money on gear (maybe smth like this?)

Important note for photoediting, I use gimp, but there are many other editors out there

Here is my suggestion. This is a paid course. I highly recommend. You can always search on YouTubebfor free content.

Try a couple different times, the best part of digital is you can just keep shooting! The course is worth the I think $20 I paid? Knowing how to use the tool makes things a lot more efficient. There is of course so much beyond that course to learn, but learning how to use the tool and the basics of composition are a great way to start. I am very happy I used a course.

EDIT: here's the course I used:

So speaking as a cheap bastard who has no need for Tinder (married for fucking decades), why not something like this?

You would take better photos for the short term goal and have a solid skill going forward for the long term.

I want to get into photography, as a hobby. I don't have a camera yet, as I will only be able to afford one net year, but I bought this begginer's course for $5:

I don't know if it's good, but since I'm a complete begginer I believe anything will work. I'll start learning fundamentals and practice with my smartphone until I have a camera.

I don’t know where you are, but in the uk you can pick up a used dslr from eBay for less than £100, you don’t need anything special to start, for example the Nikon D50 here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353795899596?epid=111320755&hash=item525fe100cc%3Ag%3AexAAAOSwSdNhqoGg&LH_BIN=1

Have you considered taking a course? You don’t even need a dslr just to learn about photography.. very cheap course https://www.udemy.com/course/photography-masterclass-complete-guide-to-photography/

Then you could move more into the theories of taking a good photo, colour, form, rule of thirds etc.

I learned a great deal of what I know now before attending university by doing online courses and actively taking part within communities online, like forums, that specialised in the subjects I wanted to learn.

Good online course?

I was looking to gift my father in law an online course for his birthday. He has a DSLR and takes outdoor photo's for the most part, but I can tell he doesn't really know much about how other than pressing the button. Are there any recommendations?

I was looking at the Udemy Photography Masterclass. Any opinions?

This was the first online photography course I took and I HIGHLY recommend it. https://www.udemy.com/share/101XPa/ full price is 29.99 but on sale it’s half that.

Fora liner and more in depth course , Again, don’t pay the “list” price of 149.99 ... there’s always a discount. When I just opened it up it was saying 21.99 was the sale price for the next five hours. But I’m sure they will repeat that again very soon. https://www.udemy.com/course/photography-masterclass-complete-guide-to-photography/

I am a HUGE fan of Scott Kelby’s books. Originally I checked these out from the library and found so useful I ended up buying the box set. The five books that I have is astronomically priced right now for some reason on Amazon but here’s a used set of the first four books for $34. Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/0321966759/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_8NM4K6YNSS2DSDS17KBJ

The kindle version of the five book set is more reasonable, but I definitely prefer the hard copy. Although I have no idea why the paper back set is $550 right now… Maybe because the first book just got updated and it’s out of print?
