Max Schwarzmuller has a decent MERN course on Udemy - https://www.udemy.com/course/react-nodejs-express-mongodb-the-mern-fullstack-guide/

Can often be picked up for around €14

Hmm, it's a tricky question to answer - there are plenty of more qualified people than me when it comes to learning web development, and a lot depends on your current proficiency, learning style, and what you are interested in building. Your plan seems like a good one though - becoming proficient with HTML and CSS is always valuable, as is getting comfortable with JS (particularly if you can get into something like React).

I've just noticed that this course is on offer on udemy for the next few hours. I've not done it myself so can't speak directly to the teaching in it, but the technologies that are described would be worth getting into.

Sorry I know you said free but I don't have anything there. But for $11, I can personally recommend this class: https://www.udemy.com/course/react-nodejs-express-mongodb-the-mern-fullstack-guide/

I struggled with mongo for months trying to work through the documentation myself or with random tutorials. Literally one day with this lesson and I was finally comfortable.

I know you made a decision, but I'll throw in my advice.

This project is doable, but not in the way they want it. It should not be an app, it should be a website with access only available via the schools network. An app will require distribution, which is hard outside of the Google Play and Apple store. Plus, you have a bunch of different target platforms (phone types) to deal with, which can become a nightmare

Choose a front end - React, Angular, Vue

Choose a back end - Node.js, Apache/PHP, Windows Server/C#, Django(Python)

Choose a database - SQL or NoSQL

Personally, I like the React, Node, Mongo (NoSQL) stack, but the other options are pretty good too.

To learn, Udemy has some great classes. I personally recommend this one:

It will teach you enough of the basics to get started.

In an internship I was tasked to do an Ionic 4 + angular tutorial. After I finished it I played around with it and wanted to learn more. I found a good instructor and course on Udemy about exactly ionic 4 + angular and because of my interest I got an apprenticeship offer and continued the course a little bit more into it but soon after accepting it I was tasked to work on an actual project for a company already.

I am not saying that I am good at it but the course definitely helped me learn the basics of angular and ionic and land me job essentially.

If you want to learn JS and Node.js I can recommend Maximilian Schwarzmüller's MEAN Stack (MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, Node.js) course which you can find here: https://www.udemy.com/course/angular-2-and-nodejs-the-practical-guide/

I also just noticed he added a MERN Stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js) course if you want to learn React: https://www.udemy.com/course/react-nodejs-express-mongodb-the-mern-fullstack-guide/

These courses are shorter than the TCWD2020 you already started with, but I think the TCWD2020 course covers much more topics that are also relevant to learning web dev. So depending on your experience with JS I would start with the shorter courses if your only goal is to learn a JS Framework and Node.js.

To be honest the courses will be on sale most of the time and for the prices they are worth it even if you end up only doing some parts of them.

This instructor is great. I took his nextJS course and it was great. havent taken this one but I'm sure it'll get you there.

Ive also used Brad Traversy in the past and liked him. He has a MERN stack course that Im' sure would be pretty solid. Haven't done it though.

I did take this course by stephen grider and didn't love it. I would NOT recommend it, but wanted to show you the one I did. The reason I show it here is because it's the top result on Udemy for searches of "react and node", so be warned, avoid this one.
