Buy this, "skip" every question on the tests and study the answers. They give explanation and a link to the relevant documentation. It's literally the same questions as the exam.

I get that. I have a bad memory too, so I wasn't sure how I would do the second time around. Fortunately while the questions are slightly different the second time around, they were pretty similar in terms of the answers they expected. I started from scratch too 6 months ago.
I totally feel you on feeling like you can fit the role successfully but the exam terrorizing you. I felt the same way after my first try. I think you'll get it the second time around!

I recently just passed the basic admin cert exam. I too was an accidental admin with out a cert for a long time. Most of what I know is self taught. To prepare for the exam, I found 300 question practice test on Udemy (https://www.udemy.com/course/salesforce-admin-certification-practice-test-spring-2020/), did the tests and reviewed the questions I missed. A handful of the questions in the practice tests were on the actual test. For reviewing questions I got wrong, I actually just read up the Documentation for whatever feature instead of doing Trailheads. If you can get \~70% on the practice tests I linked, I'd say you have good chances of passing the actual test. Good luck!
