My two cents...

If you already are a technologist at heart and understand the fundamentals of networks, hardware, and how operating systems work; I would instead spend a few weeks in Linux Academy building, tinkering, and experimenting with developing a fundamental understanding of internet infrastructure, vim, and command-line and then spend a week or two prepping for the Terraform Certified Associate exam...

I spent three months doing AWS and Azure fundamental certs but they really weren't that impressive to hiring managers; HR tended to be impressed with fundamental certs but not senior engineers and technical team leads...

My three tips for transitioning into the cloud engineering side of IT for those with fundamental technical knowledge/skills and/or IT experience is this…

  1. DO NOT waste your time using free VM solutions like VirtualBox; it’s a terrible product… Oracle should write me a check for the hundreds of hours I have wasted over the years trying to use it as a tool for learning Linux. Spending the 70 dollars on VMWare Workstation is something I should have done years ago.
  2. The book “Internet Infrastructure: Networking, Web Services, and Cloud Computing,” is great… I read every chapter a few times and took the time to answer the questions in depth at the end of every one… You can find it on the dark web for free.
  3. I used this Udemy course, completing it twice, and passed my Terraform certification in two weeks… This is the BEST Terraform certification prep course out there; trust me, I have tried them all.

There is no way around it, you HAVE to spend money to effectively learn, and these strategy worked great for me...

I had five offers in 3 days this past June...
