I asked a similar question albeit it’s something I’ve been passionate about for years and done lots of research on, I also listen to a variety of security podcasts and am my family/friends “geek”

I’ve struggled for information on how to start however, but after looking around at various reviews and things I’m going to go for this course:

There are good courses on Udemy. I’d start with the courses from Nathan House, for example: https://www.udemy.com/course/the-complete-internet-security-privacy-course-volume-1/

Then you can find courses covering ethical hacking and pen testing. That should get you up and running easily.

I am sitting for network+ exam in about 2 weeks, i am confident i will pass that. i have done a udemy course on linux titled "beginner to power user", but i wouldnt call myself a power user just yet, i know my around it and know what to search for in case i get stuck. i also did this udemy course https://www.udemy.com/course/the-complete-internet-security-privacy-course-volume-1/ to get familier with some security stuff.

i dont want to pursue sec+ or other comptia certs because of how broad they are, how little they are valued in the job market, and i feel like its mostly memorization. after doing some research, it feels as though i would gain more practical skills by studying for oscp and failing it than to study for security+ and passing it.

Take a look at this course on Udemy: https://www.udemy.com/course/the-complete-internet-security-privacy-course-volume-1/

There are a few other ones on there that also seem really good.

You could also start with something simple like this Youtube course. You won't become an expert by watching it but it's a good start.

Hey,
I would suggest looking at the following sources:

https://www.cybrary.it/course/building-an-infosec-lab/

https://danielmiessler.com/blog/build-successful-infosec-career/

Grant Collins Cybersecurity Homelab - https://youtu.be/P85L2vwmBKA

Finally a medium article: https://medium.com/illumination/building-a-cybersecurity-lab-a-simple-guide-on-using-security-operating-systems-to-build-a-home-b288cd7ce8f0

On a side note, if you are just getting your feet wet I would recommend the following great courses:

https://www.udemy.com/course/the-complete-internet-security-privacy-course-volume-1/

Black Hills Information Security webcasts : They do some great free ones and some based on a pay what you can model. And the instructors are ex SANS instructors. I am attaching a link to one but you should definitely check out their discord channel.

I can vouch for everything linked in here, I have been positively impacted from all of them. DM me if you have any other queries!

My 2c? This is a shorter method, but more focused on pentesting which may not be your interest - you're starting really broad with your intentions.

Complete this: https://www.udemy.com/course/the-complete-internet-security-privacy-course-volume-1/

Sign up for HTB: https://hackthebox.eu/

Do at least 30 walkthroughs with Ippsec: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa6eh7gCkpPo5XXUDfygQQA (copy what he does, Googling things you don't understand along the way)

Optional: VHL: https://www.virtualhackinglabs.com/

OSCP: https://www.offensive-security.com/

Can apply for pentester job once you have OSCP if desired.
